flagthousand — the world, drawn in its flags.
Here's a few things you can do here.
- Zoom in close. Scroll to zoom, drag to move around — it works like a map. Pinch does the same on a trackpad or phone. Go all the way in; the dense corners are the point.
- Click any flag and the sheet tells you whose it is — all 874 are wired.
- Search for one. Type a name in the box up top and the matches light up where they live.
- Get it on paper. The whole sheet prints A0 — about 47 × 33 inches. Buy the poster and it ships free.
Cool, what am I looking at?
A map of the world drawn in its flags. Not just the countries — the states, provinces, territories, regions and a good number of cities too, each flag sitting over the place it belongs to. Nearly a thousand of them, sourced from Wikimedia Commons and set over a dark landmass so the flags do the talking.
Some corners go deep: Australia with its states and regions, Brazil and Mexico with theirs, Russia's subjects, Japan's prefectures, a strip of organisation flags along the bottom — Red Cross to ASEAN — and a few flags that exist mostly because somebody proposed them (Antarctica, Earth).
Wait, I can buy it?!
Yes! It prints as one huge A0 sheet — 1189 × 841 mm, about 47 × 33 inches — on 170gsm coated silk. Having this on the wall is a lot of fun; people stand in front of it and hunt for flags they know. You can buy it here, and shipping is free.
Getting one on the wall
It's printed to order at whichever press is nearest to you and posted from there, so it travels a short way rather than a long one. If you would rather print it yourself, Print / PDF in the menu gives you the same sheet at the same size — bring paper.
